White 10/87 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Asa Locke House is notable as a well-preserved example of a sidehall Italianate style farmhouse in wincnester.
It is further signlilcant Ior Its associations with the Locke family, a prominent local family with extensive landholdings in the area surrounding the house, from at least 1699. The Locke House therefore meets Iriteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Locke House is a two-and-one-half story, gable-roofed sidehall house, with the entrance ofiset to the left. The three-bay facade has full-length windows in a six-over-six configuration, on the lower story. The windows of the side elevations and upper story throughout contain six-over-six sash. All windows rest on bracketed sills and are set within surrounds with canted corners. The entrance door is also set in a surround of elaborate moulding with canted corners.
The door has both transom and sidelights, and contains upper panels of glass. A two-sided open porch with chamfered posts and segmental openings encircles the lower story. A full-height gabled bay with a lunette window stands on the east elevation. A two stage ell, and a two-bay garage are attached to the rear of the main house. The perimeter of the lot is bordered by a low granite retaining wall. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Beyond the present intersection of High & Ridge Streets on the hill west of ambriage street, was the farm of James Locke, son of William Locke, one of Woburn's first settlers. James Locke was living on his Winchester farm as early as 1699, when he bought it from James,Converse.
James Locke was the ancestor of many families of the same name, who lived in Winchester to the 1930s. James great-grandson, Josiah Locke, built the Josiah Locke House (1803, #10, N.R. 3/2/79) at 195 High Street. Another Locke descendant the. Reverend Samuel Locke, was president of Harvard during the years just before the Revolutionary War. This house was built by Asa Locke between 1831 and 1857. Locke bought this lot of "improved land" in 1826 from Benjamin Wyman, a relative of his wife, Lucy. Asa Locke was a prosperous farmer who previously lived on nearby Ridge Street, and sold his farm produce at the Boston and charlestown markets. It is possible that Asa Locke never lived in this house, and that Elbridge actually resided here.
Elbridge inherited the house in In 1902 the house passed out of the Locke family ownership, and was bought by Handel Pond, a partner in the Ivers & Pond Piano Company.
