White 10/87 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Kenelum Baker House is notable as a well-preserved vernacular Italianate cottage, built by local builder Kenelum Baker and used as his own residence. The Kenelum Baker house therefore meets riterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Kenelum Baker House is a center gable Italianate cottage based on a rectangular plar The boxlike form is capped with a gable It exemplifies the use of the Italianate style for a small dwelling. roof of low pitch, with a broad overhanging cornice.
The center entrance is is set within a shallow, full-height gabled pavilion, embellished with a triple-arch frontispiece of latticework. The gable window consists of a pair of slender, round-headed lights. one-story polygonal bays flank the center entrance door. The trabeated entrance is flanked by full sidelights. Kenelum Baker, who built this house as his own residence, was an active iocal carpenter/housewright who was responsible for the Parker House (c.1o5, #220), the old Adams School (1857, demolished), and his own house at 4 Norwood Street. Kenelum Baker, the builder/owner of this house, lived here from 1856 until 1888.
(In 1850, according to the Winchester census of that year, Baker and his wife Eliza, both age.26, were residing on Main Street. Baker, who did the plans and specifications for the Adams School, recom- mended that the school be built on a Swanton street lot, rather than on costlier Washington Street property. By 1886 the Baker house was owned by Henry Miller, who was active in local affairs, and was a founder of the Winchester Electric Light Co. in 1888.
