Date 10/78; rev. by H.White 10/87 -1 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The John Mason House is a well-detailed example of a high styled Italianate house, and is associated with one of the first Boston businessmen to move to Winchester during the early period of suburbaniza- tion. Therefore the Mason House meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms uf other buildings within the community. The Mason House exemplifies the large suburban residences built ontuy ectang by prosperous Boston businessmen during the second half of the nineteenth This ample house is set amidst expansive landscaped grounds on a hill east of the town center.
The Mason House is a two-and-one-half story dwelling with a truncated hip roof covered with grey slate. The lower slope of the roof is punctutated by round-headed gable windows. The Mason House is is based on a I-plan, and the house exhibits the irregular silhouette, replete with polygonal bays and porches on three elevations, as well as the florid ornament which characterized later Italianate design. The broadly overhanging eaves rest on alternating single and paired scroll brackets with pendant drops. The entrance is offset to the left, and the double doors have upper round-headed panels of glass. The entrance is set within an elaborate open porch, with paired chamfered columns. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.
The Mason house was built during the early 1860s, possibly as a speculative venture. It was sold by the original owner at auction to John C. Mason sometime before 1875. Mason was among the earliest of the wave of prosperous Boston businessmen to settle in Winchester during the third quarter of the nineteenth century. newly laid out crescent Avenue. 1.
