White (Formerly #4 Brooks Street) NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Albert_Ayer House is notable as a conservative, and well-detailed example of the Italianate style, built during the earliest days of suburban resi- dential development in Winchester.
The Albert Ayer house is also significant as the residence of Albert Ayer, a prominent local citizen during the third quarter of the nineteenth century. Therefore the Ayer House meets Criteria B and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Ayer House exemplifies vernacular interpretations of the Italianate style in Winchester. Based on a rectangular plan, with a five-bay facade organization, the house has a gable roof with its ridge parallel to the street, and short gable returns. The wide corner boards and chamfered posts of the full-width open verandah are typical features of the style. Windows have a six-over-six sash configuration, with projecting lintels and sills. The center roof gable and broadly overhanging cornice began to appear by 1860..
The round-headed window of the center gable is another characteristic feature of this style.. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE.. Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This house was constructed circa 1865, and was first owned by Albert Ayer, whose brother Thomas Ayer lived at the adjacent property at 8 Grove Street, (circa 1854, #326). Albert Ayer, like his brother, was active in local affairs during the second half of the nineteenth century. Albert was a memper of the Board of Selectmen in the years 1874, 1890, 1092, ana 1097- His pro-temperance views earmed him the appoint as a special policeman ir 1888, and he also served as a tax collector in 1884, Town Clerk from 1890- 1898, and as an Assessor from 1862-1898.
