1:25,000 Recorded by Susan Keats, Marcia Wood Organization Winchester Historical Comm Date 12/78; rev. by H. White 10/31 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Edward Sullivan House is notable as a well-preserved worker's cottage dating from the third quarter of the nineteenth century, a period of local industrial and commercial growth. The Sullivan House exemplifies the modest houses built on small lots occupied by Winchester's growing working class population. Therefore the Sullivan House meets Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Edward Sullivan House is a small worker's cottage built circa 1875.
Although numerous worker's cottages of the period survive, none are as well- preserved and unaltered as this example. The simple, one-and-one-half story cottage is three bays wide and one bay deep. It has a gable roof with the ridge parallel to the street, and with short gable returns. The center entrance is topped by a divided light transom; windows have a two-over-two sash configuration. A one-story shed-roofed ell stands to the rear. The Sullivan House is entirely devoid of ornamentation: this absence of detail is typical of modest workers' housing. This type of house is found in other Boston area communities, such as Cambridge, and in nineteenth century industrial villages. throughout New England. It is typical of the small, plain, inexpensive yet soundly built cottages of the second half of the nineteenth century.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The Sullivan House stands on Kendall Street, which was first depicted on the Walling Map of Winchester of 1854. As the network of residential streets outlying the town center grew, numerous residents erected modest The (1876, #154). The Sullivan House is one of five dwellings owned by Edward Sullivan, a local stone mason. The house was inherited by his three children by 1893. The Sullivan family resided at 19 Kendall Street for a time. 1. Edward & Hannah Sullivan 1898-1920 2. Johanna T. O'Sullivan 1921-1923 3. Frederick F.
