Therefore the Henry Grover farm meets Criterion A ofnthe National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Henry Grover House is a double house consisting of two side-by-side identical units. The Grover House is two-and-one-half stories, and based on a rectangular plan with a two-and-one-hali story rear ell. Ihe four-bay facade is symmetrically arranged, with paired center entrance doors set within an open porch.
There is a one-story polygonal bay on each side elevation. The gable roof is of moderate pitch, with the ridge parallel to the street. Window sash is of two-over-two configuration throughout. Iwin interior chimneys are placed on the rear slope of the roof. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. On this site stood a house built circa 1823, by a well-known local ,housewright/carpenter Dana Fay. The Dana Fay. house was moved in two sections circa 1884: the main block of the house was moved to 37-39 Pond "Street (q.v.) and the rear ell appears to have been moved directly across - Cambridge Street (236 ambridge Street).
Henry Grover, a farmer, bought the property from Charles Mason in 1884, and had the old Fay house moved, making way for the present house, which he shared with Frank Grover until 1912. Other structures listed on the farm of almost 25 acres, were a barn, two greenhouses, two henhouses. The house came under the ownership of the Purcell family in 1923. The house and 9.5 acres of the surrounding land were retained as a parcel. The Purcell family continues to farm some of the acreage, and sells flowers from a roadside stand known locally as "Purcell's Pansy Patch". _BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Deeds.
