Meister SSC 837 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Skillings-Manny House possesses integrity of location, design, detting, materials, workmanship, feeling and associations. It is significant as one of Winchester's Panel Brick style houses, all designed in the mid-1870s by George D. Rand. It features red and .tar-dipped black brick to produce a polychromatic wall surface. The facade is asymmetrical with a projecting wing.
The house also represents the grander homes that began to be built in Winchester in the 1870s as suburban living was becoming more popular. It meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Mistorie Plaees. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Skillings-Manny House is a 2t-story red brick structure enclosed by a slate hip roof with modillions and corner brackets. It is trimmed with a variety of materials including brownstone watertable and window sills, black tar-dipped brick, decorative brick courses, and colored tile panels on tte front chimney. The asymmetrical facade includes a segmental arched entry with double-leaf door set next to a projecting wing. 4 porch with trefoils cut into the balustrade and bracketed posts extends across the facade from the wing.
Segmental arched windows at both stories contain 9/1 sash, which replaced 2/2 sash of the original. The windows are connected at the impost level by soldier courses and at the sill level by sawtooth courses. A bay window is located on the west elevation.. Behind the house is a double bay brick garage. The design of this house is similar to the design of the home of Prof. J.D. Runkle, built from 1875-76 and located at 84 High St., Brookline. Also by Rand, it has a similar projecting wing, similar doors, and a similar porch running across the front. (May 5, 1877). The siting of the Skillings-Manny House also is noteworthy. Placed just beyond a wide curve in Rangeley Road, it is set back with & sweeping lawn in front of it. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.
This Pane1 Brick house was the second rental property to be built by David N. Skillings ) on the grounds of his estate. It went up between 1875 and 1876. Skillings reported in the May 20, 1876, Woburn Journal that he was leasing it to Henry J. Stevens, Esq., "a lawyer of Boston." Boston Directories indicate, however, that Stevens never moved to Winchester; perhaps he rented the house for only the summer. In 1879, Skillings sold this house to John T. Manny. Manny was treasurer of the Winchester Savings Bank, of which Skillings was president. At the same time, Manny sold his house and property on Church Street to Skillings, which became incorporated into Rangeley Place. The gain for Skillings was land, while Manny gained a finer house. Skillings, Manny was a former selectman and a onetime Boston businessman, having been a partner in Badger & Manny, a wholesale boot and shoe dealer.
In 1888, Manny sold this house to Webster Childs, a Boston piano manüfacturer. Childs apparently lived in the house for just a year before buying and moving into 9 Meadowcroft (16A Ginn Road). Childs then leased the Skillings-Manny House. to James Skillings, one of David Skillings' sons, who lived here with his family through 1920. It is one of three such houses (rare in a suburban setting) 9teocbr located in the Rangeley Estates. In 1897 it was the home of Samuel Elder, a prominent Boston attorney who was involved in the Eastman murder trial, He was also counselor for Mary Baker Eddy and her Christian Science Church, and counsel for the U.S. Government. Fisheries Arbitration Case at the Hague. Elder was born a poor boy in Lawrence, Mass, went to Yale and became a successful lawyer on his own merits. He lived in this house from at least 1889 to 1905 when he moved to a handsome new house on Fernway on the west side of town.
