Jenkins NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) I'ne Skillings istate house possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and associations.
It is significant primarily for the high quality of its architectural design which features both Queen Anne and Shingle Style elements. Particularly important is its combination of brick and patterned shingle sheathing, a carved floral Queen Anne panel, a facade gable supported by shingled arches, and the numerous planes of its facade. The house also represents the grander homes being built in winchester in the last quarter of the 19th century as suburban living became more popular. It meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Skillings Estate House is a 2t-story house of complex plan that is enclosed by a house is largely constructed of brick but features patterned shingles in some portions of its upper stories.
The asymmetrical facade is dominated by a gable with decorative shingling and a carved floral panel between two windows. The lower half of the house is brick, with terra cotta floral insets and a shingled oriel window. The entrance to the house is through a large, deep' arch, in a manner associated with H.H. Richardson's Romanesque. Rand later built extensively in the Romanesque style, as can be seen in his design for Winchester Town Hall, from 1887-88. On the east side of the house, a gable is supported on shingled brackets and arches that frame a window with double-hung sash. Beneath, and extending across the facade, is a partially glazed and partially open verandah. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This Queen Anne house was built by David N.
Skillings as a rental property on the grounds of his estate, Rangeley Place. In 1880, Skillings died just as construction on the house was begun. At the same time, he was building three other houses in an enclave on Church Street (59, 61-63 and 65 Church St.), and his architect George Rand was building & brick house for himself at 1 Wildwood St. on property sold to him by Skillings. Skillings' children took over Rangeley, and the house was completed and leased, although the first tenant is unknown. By 1895, the house was rented to Mr. and Mrs. Edwin C. Gilman.
