Jenkins NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Cole House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and associations. It is significant as Winchester's most fully developed example of the Stick Style displaying stickwork and vertical valances in the gables, elaborate carved braces on the porch, and a generally irregluar romantic silhouette. It meets cri- terion C of the National Register of Historic Places.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the conmunity. The Cole House is a 22 story structure enclosed by a hip roof with cross gables and exposed rafter ends. It is built on a I-plan, and the stem of the T is encircled by a one-story porch supported on posts with elaborate carved braces. Wall surfaces beneath the porch are shingled, but are clapboardedoelsewhere. The house's several roof gables are treated with vertical valances and stickwork. Windows contain an unusual 12/2 sash. The entry, which is located on the end of the stem of the T, is simply treated. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. 20a ILE 933020 Little is known about the history of this house other than its chain of ownership.
It was built in 1886 by Frank and Emma Cole who resided there until 1929. It then passed to Frank Sexton who retained ownership until 1962.
