It is significant as an estate quality exoa oi ample of the transitional Queen Anne/Colonial Revival style,characterized by irregular, uorace massing and classical details. Importantly it retains its secluded four acre setting and its large carriage house.IItilis also significant for its associations with Lewis Parkhurst, who served as treasurer and principal partner of the Ginn publishing company, while taking a very active role in community affairsba Upon his retirement from the Ginn Company, Parkhurst was described as "the town's foremost citizen". The house meets criteria B and C of the National Register of Historic Places. Oak Knoll, which is greatly enhanced by its hilltop setting and exeeptiohally Targe lot,t9 is Winchester s finest remaining late 19th century estate. Incorporating elements of the ueen Anne and Colonial Revival styles, it is a 2} story house. thatt is clapboard clad and enclosed by a steep slate hip foof! Its irregular massing and fouto talle asymmetr idally placed chimneys with corbelled tops directly reflect the Queen Anne style while many of its details like the entry with fan and sidelights, and balustrades are taken from the Col- onial Revival style. The facade is dominated by two prominent cross gables, the western- most of which projects by several feet; one of the chimneys rises through the eastern gable.
The entry is centered on the facade between the two cross gables, and is protected by balustraded porch that extends eastward; the porch is continued around the east elevation as a balustraded terrace. This elevation is dominated by paired, two story, polygonal bays headed by balustrades; dormers with arched windows are located above. The terrace termin- ates in a glazed sunporch with fluted Doric columns and a pergola roof. Parkhurst came to Winchester in 1881 as a young Dartmouth graduate, and becansa19tni principal of the High School in 1886. After five yearsheleftthe shol to join wt Ginn's publishing company where he rose to the position' of principal partner.
By the 1890s, Parkhurstsad become ione sofathe town's most prominent citizens, initiating or par- ticipating in most civic betterment projects. He represented Winchester in the State r Senate and served on the Water Board in its early years. He was among the original peti- tioners to establish a Cooperative Bank in 1893, and in 1897 was elected the first presi- dent of the Middlesex National Bank; Winchester's first commercial bank. He was instru- mental in supporting Forrest Manchester's plan to develope a town center park and playing. field, and in 1902 was appointed to the Building Committee studying the issue of a new High School.
Throughout his life he was active in the Unitarian Church, including serving on the building committee after the original structure burned in 1897: In the early years of the 20th century he was involved in establishing the Winchester Hospital, and was a member of the committee appointed tofind a solution to the problem of grade crossing oi the Boston & Lowell Railroad in the town center. -Later, in 1917, he served as chairman - -of the Committêe on Public Safety düring World_ War I and was involved in the er- ection of a memorial to veterans. In 1915 he was appointed to the town's first planning board. In 1930 he prêsided' over the exercises commemorating Massachusett's Tercentenary.
