It is significant as a well conceived estate housevoa 08 whose eclectic design draws on, and unifies several period styles: Queen Anne, Colonial ,n0t20d Revival, Tudor Revival, and Shingle. Important features include irregular massing, Clas- sical columns and balustrades, cross gablesiwith florid half-timbering and embossed verge- boards, and shingles wrapping around windows and corners. The house meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places.o ARCHITECIURAL SICNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. 2x"E 10 "Ex"E) 03019 The Marshall Jones House is one ofaseveralsestate houses located on Highland Avenue on the western slope of the Middlesex Fells Reservation.
The acquisition ofi the Fellsnbyythe org Metropolitan Park Commission insthei1890s no doubt made this areavattractive to wealthysje turn-of-the-century purchasers. It is a story house that is clad with shingles and enclosed by a slate gable roof. Itsrasymmetrical facade is dominated by two unequally sized cross gables that are detailed with florid half-timbering, embossed vergeboards and finials. An uncoursed stone chimney rises throughothe western gable. Between the gables is a porte- cochere with paired Tuscan cloumns. A verandah extends westward from the porte-cochere and wraps around the west elevation where it terminates in a bow at a slightly lower level. The bow is picked up at the second story where a porch with bell shaped cap cantilevers out on large carved brackets, andsthen extends ácross part of the rear elevation as a glazed sun- porch.

Jones, the first owner of this house was a wealthy businessman who served on*ata3nt the local Board of Health in the early-20th century. --At that time, under the leadership of Dr. Clarence J. Allen, the board greatly expanded its activities to include scientific inspection of the town's" milk supply, improved handling of garbage and the town dump, and an active campaign to stop pollution of the town's streams and ponds. These local activities reflected national advances in and concern with issues of public health.
Jones was also part of a committee of distinguished citizens appointed by town meeting in 1906 to study the issue of the dangerous railroad crossing in the town center.This was an issue of great controversy, and several solutions had previously been proposed and rejected. The committee came up with a new plan "by which the railroad was to be carried through the town on an elevated viaduct and cross the highways at the center on a bridge of two wide stone arches." (Chapman; 1939; p-319). This plan was voted down at a special town meeting on February 11, 1907, and the issue was not finally resolved until 1950, after the state had taken over responsibility for grade crossings.
