Jenkins NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Joseph Remick House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and associations. It is significant primarily for the high quality of its Classical Revival style design which, in its sparseness, reflects the contemporary neo-rationalist movement. It displays large stuccoed wall surfaces relieved by sym- metrically placed door and window openings with classically detailed surrounds. Its flat balustraded roofline adds to the abstract geometric effect.
The house meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Joseph Remick House, designed in an abstract Classical Revival style mode, is a two story, stucco clad structure enclosed by a balustraded flat roof. Its symmetrical de- sign features a five bay central section flanked by wings that are one story at the front of the house and two stories at the rear. At the first story of the central section are five French windows, the central three of which are headed by triangular pediments. At the second story, five more French windows with metal balconies rise from a beltcourse that acts as a sill. These second story windows are headed by keystones and are placed directly beneath the cornice that is embellished with a Greek key frieze.
The one story section of the wings contain double-leaf round arched doors, and are headed by balustrades. A partial third story is 'set well back behind the plane of the facade. A balustraded terrace extends forward from the house. A similiarly designed three bay one story garage is attached to the rear of the house. A pergola runs along Swan Road at the rear of the property. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in loçal or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Built in 1909 by Joseph Remick, this house was popularly called the "Baby Sanborn House" because of its resemblance to the Sanborn mansion built further along Cambridge Street, at the corner of High Street in 1907 (NR: 12/14/81). After 1920, Otto A. Lawton and then William A. Mitchel lived there. From 1928 until the 1940s George Brayley, an attorney, owned this house.
In 1947, it was bought by Philip Downes, a son of the family which had occupied the Sanborn House.
