It was also the home of Wakefield's first rural postal carrier. The building retains integrity of location, setting, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association, and meets criterion A and C of the NRHP on the local level. ARCHITECIURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This is one of Wakefield's best preserved, rural Federal houses. 2½ stories high with a low pitched roof, the 5 bay house has a center entrance.
The door surround features fine pilasters with delicate entasis supporting an entablature with heavy cornice and flanking 3/4 length sidelights. The roof is framed with a boxed cornice and no returns, a practice which might indicate an early construction, were it not for the two interior chimneys, whoch are found only in houses built late in the Federal period in Wakefield. The grouping of windows in the outer bays is typical of local practice. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This house may have been built for Daniel Sweetser, who was living here in 1795. Its best known occupant, however, was Col. James Mansfield, who was the first rural postal carrier in town.
This homestead formed a part of the community which was named Montrose after the opening in 1850 of the South Reading Branch of the Boston and Maine Railroad. Ten houses are recorded on Lowell Street between Vernon Street and the Saugus border in 1765, but the neighborhood grew slowly before the opening of rail transportation.
