The building retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association, and meets criterion C of the NRHP on the local level. It also meets the Oriterion exception B, because it is a significant moved building. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.
This house, which was moved to its present site, is an unusual form for its period, and may originally have been used for another purpose. Iwo stories high, it is only four bays long under a gable roof. The door surround, placed in the first bay, is unusually robust. Basically Greek Revival, it features a simple surround of 6 light transom and 3/4 length sidelights. Possibly, it was inserted when the house was moved here. The windows with footed sills, dentil cornice, and paired arched gable field windows are high style for the area, but not inconsistent with Beebe family ownership. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owmers played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmunity. This house was moved to the site when Hancock Street was laid out after the Second World War.
Development of the areacame as a result of the destruction of the A.G. Walton House, built about 1890 near the corner of Main and Lowell Streets. It stood on the site of the c. 1760 John Brown, Esq. house, now, ironically, divided in two, and extant at 49 Cordis Street and 524 Lowell Street. The building may have been built as servants' quarters or a carriage house for the Beebe estate at 142 Main Street. Lucius Beebe lived there between 1855 and 1884, dates compatible with the style of this - structure. Beebe was a trustee of the Beebe Library since its formation in 1856; in 1868 its name was changed to the Beebe Town Library to honor the wealthy cotton and leather businessman.
