The building retains integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association andf meets criteria A and C of the NRHP on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the conmunity. This fine and well preserved example of Federal domestic building in Wakefield is thought to have been built about 1789. Two and one half stories high under a high gable roof, the five bay structure has a central door whose surround is composed of simple pilasters supporting a low entablature and cornice, and frame 3/4 length sidelights. The surround, though plain, is robust. The roof is framed with short returns and boxed cornice, and it has the simple molding piece joining the cornice to the facade which is typical of Georgian and Federal houses of the area.
Its two internal chimneys indicate that it was built late in the period. It has eight working fireplaces and two brick ovens. Investigation has shown that corncobs were used in the walls for insulation. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This house was the 19th century home of Capt. Aaron Foster. The captain, who was born in Danversin 1803 and died in Wakefield in 1896, was a prominent citizen , a Selectman, School Committeeman, and Representative to the General Court. He was first amrried to Abigail Mansfield of Lynnfield in 1832. She died in 1837 and next year he married Abigail's cousin, Mary Mansfield. After Mary's death in 1862 hge married Susan (Sperry) Plummer in 1867.
The post World War Il subdivision surrounding the house is typical of the northern rural area of Wakefield. Large farms could no longer afford to keep their expensive acreage, which wqas sold off to developers for smaller houses.
