ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. One of the finer Queen Anne houses in this neighborhood, this 2½ story gable roof house with offser pavilion shows the influence of the Stick Style in its porch with open-work tail and frieze, gable field and first f1oor, but it is muted. Queen Anne characteristics predominate, use of the horizontal line, emphasized by using clapboard on the first andshingle on the top floors, shed roof window hoods, multi- pane sash, jerkin head on the main gable roof, and deep eaves supported on heavy braces. The use of patterned shingle to further elaborate the surface is characteristic of both Shingle and Queen Anne styles. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the by the heirs of Thomas Emersor (1805-1871).
Emerson, who lived at the northeast corner of Lawrence and Main Streets, was a leading local shoe manufacturer, and his family followed him in the business. He was a representative and senator in the State Legislature, and served in almost every office of this town. His firm was the first to introduce the McKay sewing machine, which changed shoe production technology in the region, and introduced new varieties of leather. Their first shoe making shop was on the property of Thomas Senior, which was before the establishment making in South Reading. The area continued to house shoe making activity. Henry Haskell erected his shoe factory on Wave Ave between 1874-89 next west to this house.
He had purchased his business from John Aborn, for whom that street is named, who lived on Main Street near Aborn, and who had in turn bought from John White, who lived on, Main Street and what is now White Avenue.
