It retains integrity of location, setting, design, orkmanenaino betisi jig-saw materials, workmanship, feeling and association, and meets criterion C of the NRHP on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This very fine Italianate style house is 2½ stories high, gable end to the street, with a three bay side hall, and l shaped plan. distinctive feature is the porch across the front in lacy iig-saw cut work; similar but less ornate porches are found at a few other houses in Wakefield. Pillars on a jig-saw cut rail, brackets and turned drops add to the lacy effect. The house has other fine details, such as the shell carving of the paired brackets supporting the roof, ope molaing usea Ior eaging, double arcnea gable Ilela windows, and footed sills.
It appears to have been built fairly late ir the period. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This house was built between 1875 and 1883, a period when Wakefield's population was growing by leaps and bounds. Immediately after the Panic of 1873 and the death of Cyrus Wakefield, founder of the town's most important industry, the Wakefield Rattan Co., the town regained its industrial strength, and new houses were built to meet the needs of an increased work force. At the same time, the town was becoming a prime suburban suburb, as it was a railcenter, with good connections to Boston. Interestingly this elegant house was situated next door to Henry Haskell's shoe factory.
The location of shoe shops next to houses in this area had been the case since it began to develop in the 1840's, and was to continue until the 20th century.
