It retains integrity of design, setting, location, materials, workmanship, feeling and association, Criterion C of the NRHP on the local level. ARCHITECIURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.
Although this house has been altered, it is still possible to find here the confident design, captured in a photograph in the 1896 Proceedings of the 250th Anniversary of the Ancient Town of Redding. That Design was the result of a mixture of styles popular in the 1880s: Queen Anne, Shingle Style and Colonial Revival. Essentially more conservative in massing than the fully developed examples of these styles, this house, which is basically the familiar L-shaped gable house, had the complex spatial arrangments found in Queen Anne houses. A second floor porch has been filled with an oriel, and the wrap around first floor porch has been enclosed and its proportions altered. The oversized double sloped gable field supported on shingled braces was frequently used in the 1880s; the device conveyed images of vernacular medieval English country houses.
Colonia Revival is the detailing of the porch and the stair and bay windows with their stained glass panels. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmunity. Edwin C. Miller, who probably built this house, graduated from MIT in 1079, and entered his father's firm, Henry F. Miller and Sons Piano Co., and became its director in 1895. The factory, located on Smith Street, stood opposite the Town Hall, now demolished, and the Wakefield Block, still standing though altered, at Main and Lincoln Streets. The piano factory was a congenial addition to wakefields industrial center, employing skilled craftsmen to produce nationally recognized pianos. Their cases were though to be particularly "artistic", their tone "song-like".
Miller was an influential member of the Board of Trade, helped to get the Upper Depot built, was President of the Wakefield Agricultural and Horticultural Society, a member of the committee selected to purchase the water works, and represented the town in 1893 in the Legislature.
