The building retains integrity of location, setting, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association, and meets criterion C of the NRHP on the local level.
ARCHITECIURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the comnunity. This is an interesting contrast to the house at 20 Lawrence Street. Both are Queen Anne, but this house achieves the complexity so valued in the period through elaboration of the surface rather than of massing. It reuses the iree bay, gable end to the street with a side-hall plan, developed in the Greek Revival stylistic period, and gives it an up to date look with a jerkin head on the gable roof, shallow front porch and two story bay window. The patterned shingles, multi-pane sash, and turned porch posts are standard elements of vernacular Queen Anne style in Wakefield. The well-preserved carriage barn to the rear is one of few remaining in town, and gives a completed picture of domestic building of the period.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmunity. Lawrence Street, shown on the map of 1857, was not settled until about 1871, when it was accepted by the town. In 1874 both James E. Emerson, of the leading shoe manufacturing concern, and S.O. Richardson, proprietor of the Sherry Wine and Bitters medicine manufacturing company, were partners in the subdivision of the street. The Thomas Emerson homestead, now demolished stood on the north east corner of Lawrence and Main Streets, and the family's first shoe factory was situated on the property. For a long the shoe trade in South Reading, the actual manufacturing of shoes was done in samll shoe shops scattered throughout the community. Frank A.
Clapp, who lived here in 1894 when the house was featured in The Wakefield Souvenir, was a real estate salesman with an office on 'North Main Street. As the town's industry continued to grow and diversify after the opening of the Boston and Maine Railroad in 1844, population climbed to meet the need for a large labor force.
