The house retains integrity of location, design, workmanship, feeling and association, and meets criterion C of the NRHP on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the comnunity. This is a good example of the vernacular Georgian/Federal house form in Wakefield. Iwo and one half stories high with its low pitched gable roof parallel to the street, it has five bays and a center entrance. The paired windows at the end bays, and narrow boxed cornice are typical of the town's Federal style. The Italianate porch and two story ell were added in the 1850s or 60s, and perhaps the door surround was altered at this time. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.
This house was built before 1795 by Elias Emerson. He sold it to Timothy Poole, a house painter, and here Franklin Poole, his son was born in 1808. Franklin, also a house painter by trade, was interested in capturing on canvas the scenes of historic South Reading and Wakefield. His many pictures a.large proportion of them in the collection of the Wakefield Historical Society, are important local artistic and historical artifacts. They are remarkable research resource, as well as the work of a talented amateur landscapist. Poole was also a State Representative in 1847. The house is also significant for the Rufus Porter paintings on the walls. He was an itinerant muralist of the primitive school in the Federal period whose work has been given critical acclaim.
