It retains integrity of location, setting, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association, and meets criterion Cof the NRHP on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This five bay, two story, clapboard house is somewhat unusual for Wakefield because of its hip roof and brick end walls. It is one of the more high style examples in town.
Unlike many Federal houses in town, this has two interior chimneys, indicating that it was built late in the period. Its door surround is composed of slim pilasters with entasis, a low entablature - with a compressed frieze, and 3/4 length sidelights. Windows are placed high under the boxed cornice. Unlike most rural houses of the period, it is oriented north toward the road instead of to the south and into the sun. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Though this house does not appear on the somewhat inaccurate map of 1830, town historians believe it to have been built about 1810. One of the early occupants of the house was Elizabeth Bryant, who before her marriage was a popular, successful tailor, with a good reputation for industry.
She married James Walton, a member of another early Reading family, who was a selectmen. They had four children. In 1750 Salem Street extended only to Vernon Street, and travelers to the coast would take Lowell Street east. Between 1810 and 1812 Salem Street was extended to meet Lowell over its present route.
