I'he building retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association, and meets criterion A and C of the NRHP on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.
This 1½ story former shoe shop is a good example of an important local building form which in the 19th century was to be found dotting the south and west sides of the town. It nas been added to and converted into a residence, but its original simplicity has been retained. The high peaked gable roof is placed with the ridge parallel to the street; three bays are squeezed into the small front facade, with the door in the first bay. The whole, with one story ell, is set on very high brick foundations. A door in the basement area suggests that the basement was used for storage. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmunity. This was the shoe shop of David Nichols,a shoemaker, who is listed on the map of 1857 as living at the old Patch house at 103 Salem Street.
Before 1862, when the McKay sewing machine was introduced to Wakefield, a large number of town residents made shoes in such shops in their yards. In the main, the individual shoemaker was in charge of producing the shoe: he cut the leather, his wife and daughters bound, and his sons and apprentices finished up the work. The finished product was sometimes marketed by "manufacturers" like L.B. Evans, and others, who trucked the shoes to Boston at so much a mile, sold them, he maker with groceries at his company store.
