The bungalow retains integrity of location, setting, design, materials workmanship, feeling and association, and meets criteria C of the NRHP on the local level. ARCHITECIURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the conmunity. A very good example of its type, this small bungalow may have been copied from a pattern book.
One and half stories high, its roof with exposed rafters, shelters a deep screened porch, and is supported on squat battered pillars resting on tall rock faced ashlar granite bases which extend through the foundations. Pillars and the porch rail are paneled. A large gabled dormer with exposed rafters is centered on the broad, steeply pitched roof. The motif of panels is further explored on the side elevations, which include rectangular, roofed oriels, large and small, providing added light and space. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmunity. Park Street was accepted by the town in 1852, but house lots remained unbuilt to 1874. The area experienced residential development after the opening of the Boston and Maine railroad in 1844, and the arrival of successful industry in its wake.
The town prospered from its increased industrial base and also became, beginning slowly in the 1860s and increasingly through the 70s and 80s, a commuter suburb. In 1922 the house was the home of Clarence A. Van Derveer, a mechanical engineer. He also dealt in real estate.
