It retains integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association, and meets criterion C of the NRHP on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of - other buildings within the community.
This is a unique and very fine example in Wakefield of a Greek Revival sa the boay or Shé house and supforted byr Eour Fluted Doric columns fronting a porch. The door, set in the center of the five bay elevation, features a paneled architrave surround with circle filled corner blocks, a pattern repeated for the sidelights and the ten light transom. Windows also have architrave surrounds, they extend to the floor at the porch, a typical Greek Revival narrow side door has the same complex surround and multi-pane transom. y Bicrouna ahd mul i pang transim. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmunity. Crescent Street existed as early as 1812, when it was a lane with a gate across it at Main Street.
Though not accepted by the town until 1838, it had been in wide use since the establishment ten years earlier of the South Reading Academy, a private school preparing young men for further Baptist theological studies, and informally serving as a high school. The Central Grammar School joined the Academy on the hill before 1857, but in 1847 the Academy building was purchased by the town to use as its own public high school. Abel F. Hutchinson, a shoe maker, purchased this lot in 1836, and three years later built the house. Shoe making was the town's most important industry before the opening of the railroad in 1844 brought industrial diversification and expansion. It remained, however, the second most valuable product, employing a significant number of the town's citizens, both men and women. Since no shoe shop is pictured on the lot, it is to be supposed that Mr.
Hutchinson was employed by one of the town's shoe manufacturers, like John White, L.B. Evans, or Thomas Emerson.
