Recorded by Architectural Preservation Associates Organizatian Wakefield Historical Commission Date March 1985 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The Woodville School building is a well preserved example of Neo-Dutch Colonial institutional architecture and represents local design for public schools in Wakefield in the 1920s.
The building retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association, and meets Criterion C of the NRHP on the local level. ARCHITECIURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This is a good example of Wakefield's public school building of the second decade of the 20th century, which includes the similar Montrose School. While this is Neo-Colonial in the Dutch mode and the other is - 0095° Neo-Georgian, they are both symmetrical, of red brick and cast stone, and are detailed with oversized cast stone elements. The 2 story structure has a deep, 1 story center pavilion which is dominated by six long windows. It is flanked by two lower slate roofed elements, one containing an entry porch.
The parapets are stepped and are ornamented with diamond patterns picked out in brick, and inthe central block the name, "Woodville School" is inscribed in cast stone. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmunity. In 1700 the area now considered Wakefield had four schoolhouses, which served the Center, South, West and East Districts. By 1845 the East District's school was called Little World, but this name was changed to the more formal Woodville School by the School Committee in 1857. The picturesque nickname remained in common usage for the area into the twentieth century. The area was thinly settled, and populated primarily by farmers and shoemakers until twentieth century suburban development, which in the main, followed the Second World war.
The present school building was constructed at a cost of $67,000 in 1920.
