Regardless, it is a well preserved example of the federal style, retains integrity of location, setting, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association, and meets Criterion C of the NRHP on the local level. ARCHITECIURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This little house is unusual; if it was indeed built before 1765, its brick construction is unique, as the use of brick for entire buildings did not come into general use until after the Revolution in this area. More probably, the brick section was added to an earlier wooden house in the Federal period. If this is true, it would seem that the original piece has been demolished. It is one and one half stories under its east half, but because it is built into a hill, its western half is a full two and one half stories high.
The kitchen was placed at ground floor level. The house had the traditional Georgian/Federal form of five bays and center entrance under" a gable roof. A Federal style door surround is composed of three quarter length sidelights and a portico, which may have been added at a later time. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmunity. Wiley Street was part of the early way, now Water Street, which connected the South Parish to Lynn, shown on the map of 1750. A map in 1765 shows the artery ending at about this site, called Nat. Wiley's old house. Presumably his new one stood just east of here, and has now been demolished. The brick section could have been added between 1790 and 1850 to expand a structure then old even then.
Ihe Wiley family had lived in Little World, or Woodville, as it was later called, since before 1672. John d. 1672. and Timothy, d. 1728, father and son, served their community as selectmen and as representatives. The family remained in this neighborhood, and through much of the 19th century Montrose Avenue was called Wiley Street. Two other early family homesteads remain at 6 Montrose Ave. (pre-1730) and 472 Water Street, (c. 1774). Dr. Ernest Tyzzer, who lived here in 1927, was an early cancer expert, served as Chairman of Wakefield's Board of Health. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES maps, 1750 and 1765, Nat.
