It was probably constructed as part oi a late 19th c. suburban development populated by commuters from Boston. The building retains integrity of location, setting, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association, and meets Criteria A and C of the NRHP on the local level. ARCHITECIURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.
This late Queen Anne, 2½ story house follows the pattern for houses of its period on Wakefield by presenting its gable end to the street with one or more intersecting gables on its sides creating bays of 2 ½ stories. A one story porch wraps around north and part of the west facade. The most outstanding feature of the house is its shingle work which fills in the gables on the north, west and on the porch pediment. Second floor windows have shed roof hoods which are also decoratively shingled with ornamental bosses on the lintels. Each gable also has a decorated barge board. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Greenwood, in which Spring Street is located, was originally part of Charlestown, then of Malden and was finally annexed to Reading in 1729. During the late 19th c.
a section of Greenwood around Spring and Greenwood Streets was known as Boyntonville and twice this neighborhood petitioned without success to withdraw from Wakefield to become part of Malden once again. The area was farmland into the third quarter of the 19th c. and, in Iact, Spring street was known as Brown Street after a prominent farming family in the area. But gradually after 1845 it became the home of commuting surburbanites. Just at the turn of the 20th c. Greenwood saw a boom in suburban settlement as it was the furthest, hence most rural, spot to be reached by streetcar in the 10 cent zone from Boston.
