It retains integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association, and meets Criterion C of the NRHP on the local level.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The gambrel roof with its two interior chimneys identifies the early construction date of this 1½ story house. It is five bays wide and the door surround has been altered. It is now broad with half length sidelights and probably dates from the 1830s-50s. Window surrounds on the second floor are plane, those on the first floor have moldings. This is the only remaining 1½ story, Georgian, gambrel roofed house in Wakefield. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This house was built about 1735 by Samuel Gould.

The Gould family came to the area before 1700 settling south of Crystal Lake, then known as Smith's Pond, within the borders of Reading and Stoneham. which was farmed into the 19th c. but with the coming of the steam railroad in 1845 the complexion of South Reading changed. Settlement increased in this area of Greenwood, although its immediate neighborhood was not developed until the 1940s. With the railroad tracks being laid out, Main Street was moved from the west of this house to the east, its farmland divided for development and today it can easily be missed as it is between a row of houses and the railroad tracks. In the 1880s Dr. Horatio M. Meriam owned the hous.e and planted specimens of evergreens and flowers from all over the world in the yard and tagged them with their Latin names.
