The house retains integrity of location, setting, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association, and meets Criteria A and C of the NRHP on the local level. ARCHITECIURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.
This is one of Wakefield's best examples of the stick style. It is an idiosyncratic design 1%½ stories in height. The main section of the house has a gable roof with a transverse gable projecting on the - north and a 3½ story tower on the southwest. A side eaves overhang is supported by arched braces with pendants, a two story bay on the south has a segmentally arched roof and paired windows at both stories around the house have drip molds. The tower is flushboarded on the first two stories, and shingles on the third sare: a later date. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. According to reasearch done by Ruth Woodbury this was the last of three houses to be built before 1874 on the south shore of Crystal Lake, which was then known as Smith's Pond.
It was built for their daughter by the Lord family who owned the #7 Linden Avenue and were involved in a newspaper published in Lynn. In 1869 it was listed as being occupied by Henry T. Johnson, a book dealer. In 1902 Wm. H. Locke a cashier in the Boston Custom House lived there. The construction of this house and its two neighbors in the 1850s reflects the ease of commute to neighboring towns afforded by the railroad which arrived in 1845. The land was 46 acres of farmland belonging to James Sullivan who laid it out for development in 1844 when the railroad was being built through his property.
