The building retains integrity of location, setting, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association, and meets criterion C of the NRHP on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important' architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This is one of Wakefield's several early Federal style 3/4 houses.
It is 2½ stories in height, three bays wide, and has a gable roof with narrow boxed cornice and no returns. The latter feature was common in Wakefield only during Georgian and early Federal periods. It has lost its door surround but window surrounds remain with their simple molding. Windows are small on both stories denoting the building's early date, although the 2/1 sash is later in date. One small interior chimney remains. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. According to Lilley Eaton's Genealogical History, Deacon Daniel Green who was born in 1733 lived first in Stoneham where he was a selectman, town treasurer and church Deacon. He came to South Reading in 1785 and moved into this house which had been previously lived in by Charles Green.
Daniel was a Selectman in South Reading for a year. Among his children was Reuben Green whose house is at the corner of Spring and Greenwood Streets. The Green family as a whole came to South Reading before 1700 and settled in this area south of Crystal Lake, called then Smith's Pond, an area which came to be known as Greenwood.
