SCALE 1:25,000 Recorded by Architectural Preservation Associates Organization Wakefield Historical Commission Date March 1985 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) An interesting combination of Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival and Rational Revival styles, this is probably Wakefield's earliest example of a row style multifamily apartment block. It retains integrity of location, setting, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association, and meets criterion C. of the NRHP at the local level. ARCHITECIURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This is probably Wakefield's earliest example of a row style, multifamily apartment block.

It is an interesting stylistic mixture with Colonial Revival porches, Tudor Revival gables with strapwork, and Rational Revival hipped roof with exposed prulins. Banks of windows on the second floor with multiple panes were made famous decades earlier by H. H. Richardson on his Shingle Style Stoughton House in Cambridge. The building is 2½ stories in height and manages by its eclectic approach to individualize the six units. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmunity. Richardson Avenue was laid out in plans between 1890 and 1899 when : Solon 0. Richardson broke up the family land and developed it in the town center. His property ran from Main Street to North Avenue (then called Railroad Avenue). It is probably the gift of land granted his grandfather Dr.

Nathan Richardson, by the town in the early decades of the century to entice him to come practice in the town. Dr. Nathan and his son Dr. Solon O. Richardson manufactured Sherry Wine Bitters, a business which was continued by Solon 0. Richardson the second until 1891 when it was sold. He then moved the family homestead back from Main Street, opened up Richardson Avenue and built in 1901 the Richardson Block on the former site of the homestead. This apartment row seems to have been built at approximately the same time. Richardson Avenue has the greatest concentration of apartment rows in the town center.
