Date March 1985 5/27/81 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The mansion for which Mansion Road was named, this is an outstanding example of Colonial Revival design with very elaborate detailing.
It was the home of industrialist Charles Winship, who with Elizabeth Boit founded and operated the Harvard Knitting Mills, a significant industry for over half a century (1889-1944) in Wakefield. The building retains integrity of location, setting, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association and meets Criteria A, exception B and C of the NRHP on the local level. ARCHITECIURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the conmunity. This 2½ story Colonial Revival house is the "mansion" of Mansion Road. It is Wakefield's most ambitious Colonial Revival buildina with its flared hip roof, topped by a balustrade and two story portico on paired, fluted, composite capital columns. The portico is pedimented and has a full entablature with modillion blocks, dentils and molding. Fluted pilasters appear at each major corner.
Three bays wide, the central block of the house has Palladian composition windows on the first floor divided by a glassed entry. A one story porch on columns appears on the south and pedimented dormers on each facade. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmunity. This was the home of Wakefield industrialist Charles Winshio who together with Elizabeth Boit owned and operated the Harvard Knitting Mills. They began in 1889 and although Boit died in the 1920s the mill continued until after Winship's death in 1931. Winshin was a youna factory hand at the Allston Mill when he met Elizabeth Boit for whom he worked in the same mill for a number of years.
In 1888 the two set up their own company in Cambridgeport and moved the following year to Waketleld where they began to build the textile mill which was to be an important emoloyer in the town. Winship managed the manufacturing process which was devoted to producing merode underwear which local people embroidered in their homes before it was shioped to markets across the country. The mills were run in a progressive manner. Winship and Boit provided health care facilities on the site for employees and through a bonus plan shared profits with their employees. Winship lived at 17 Pleasant Street before this house was built on Jordan Avenue. Its later conversion to a school and sale of the land surrounding it for houses led to its drive becoming the street called Mansion Road. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Eaton, Chester.
