SCALE 1:25,000 Recorded by Architectural Preservation Associates Organizationwakefield Historical Commission Date- March 1985 * NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) A well preserved Queen Anne style house whose details suggest imagination and unconventionality on the part of its designer, this house was probably built during speculative development of Converse St. in the 1880s. It retains integrity of location, setting, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association and meets Criterion C of the NRHP on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This is a spirited Queen Anne house with high visibility on its lot. It is 2½ stories in height, has a hipped roof and traverse gable.
The roof peak in a most unusual configuration has a louvered opening and a shed roof dormer with a contemporary - sunburst fanlight. A patterned shingle band runs between the first and second along with a rope molding stringcourse. Fish scale pattern shingles are used over the second floor windows and between windows on first floor too. garrison overhang.' This house does not follow the conventions of its time closely. Rather it seems to have been the work of an inventive designer/builder. A shell mosaic at the frieze on the east is a contemporary ornament seen on at least one other house in Wakefield. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.
This section of Converse Street was laid out by 1875 when it appears on the map of that date, but no houses àre recorded as being on it.. Responding to the increasing population this area began developing in the 1870s and by the 1890s was in full swing. Much of the farm land along Converse was bought up by the Wakefield Building and Real Estate Association which laid out the lots, financed the houses and- even provided plans for new owners. This house may be an example of their development. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Wakefield Historical Society, Vertical Files, "West Side". Maps of 1875 (Converse Street but no houses), 1889 (G.H.
