Associates - Organization Wakefield Historical Date March 1985 Commission NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (1f applicable) One of 2 railroad depots existing in downtown Wakefield, this was a. main station serving the town center. It is a well preserved example of a rather unusual architectural style, Panel Brick, and represents the tremendous development of Wakefield unleased by the advent of the railroad in 1845.
The building retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association and meets Criteria A and C of the NRHP on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This is a 1½ story brick depot with a relatively simple plan, but is a style which called for quite a bit of exterior ornament, the Panel Brick Style. The main portion of the building is rectangular in shape under a gable roof, which was rebuilt in an altered form after a fire. On the west facade is a transverse central gable which projects slightly as a pavilion. On the east is an identical gable and, in addition, two angled, one story end bays and one center bay add visual complexity to the composition.
Most representative of the style's decorative intent wall chimneys on the north and south facades where the brick has been laid in panels and corbelling to make geometric designs. A corbelled stringcourse encircles the building, while rough cut granite lintels, sills and watertable add further relief to the surface. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Had it not been for Dr. Thaddeus Spaulding, the Boston & Main Railroad might have passed west of Wakefield and changed the course of its industrial and residential history. Spaulding first saw the possibilitit of the railroad and together with other prominent men arranged its passing through Wakefield in 1845.
The impact of the ease of communicatir with cities north and south of Wakefield was much the same as in many towns it passed through: it allowed industry to develop and it brought new residents who commuted to work in Boston. In 1893, in fact, the Boston & Maine had six passenger stations in town and ran 60 trains a day between Wakefield and Boston for 1500 passengers. This was a main station near town center. It originally had a baggage depot beside the track south of the station and sat on property owned by the Boston & Maine which extended as far as Murray Street.
