Recorded by Architectural Preservation Associates Organization Wakefield Historical Commission DateMarch 1985 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENI (1f applicable) One of the more elaborately detailed examoles of the Colonial Revival Style in town, this house features an unusual semi-circular portico with doric columns. It was part of the Wakefield Park development begun in the 1880s. The house retains integrity of location, setting, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association and meets Criteria A and C of the NRHP on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.
Unusual in Wakefield is this Colonial Revival house with its semi- circular portico on doric columns. The Colonial Revival Style is generally more conservative. The house is 2½ stories in height and uses rather elaborate design elements to convey its style. A broad doorway has wide leaded sidelights and an open side norch has a turned balustrade.. The windows with 8/1 sash have hood lintels with a row of guttae. Three pedimented dormers carry out the colonial stylistic references. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This house is on land which belonged in the late 19th c. to the large estate of Dr. Charles Jordan. Much of the property was sold in the 1880s and 90s for the development of Wakefield Park, which is the case here.
This house was owned by Cyrus Wakefield, nephew of ' Cyrus Wakefield who founded the Rattan Works and after whom the town was re-named in 1868. Cyrus was President and Treasurer of his uncle's company after 1873 when the elder Wakefield died. This house was probably owned as an investment.
