SCALE 1:25,000 Recorded by Architectural Preservation Associates Organization Wakefield Historical Commission Date March. 1985 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) Representing the epitome of completely developed high style Colonial Revival design - one of 2 houses in Wakefield to do so, this house is extremely well-preserved. It retains integrity of location, setting, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association, and meets Criterion C of the NRHP on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. There are two full-blown high style Colonial Revival houses in Wakefield and this is one of them. hb snze cozontal The style's scale and the amount of exterior decoration have reached their peak.
The house is 2% stories under a hip roof with flared eaves which appear late in the style's development. The cornice is like a pattern book illustration. It has modillion blocks, a dentilled frieze, egg and dart and acanthus moldings: all resting on broad, fluted ionic pilasters. The southern porch rests on paired columns; a balustrade above it has urns and a pediment. The second floor has a Palladian window composition; first floor windows are in rounded bays. The door has a carved surround and wide leaded sidelights. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Chestnut Street was laid out between Main Street and North Avenue in 1847.
It was one of the first streets to be laid out as a response to the increase in population brought about by the railroad: That increase continued into the 1890s and as it did, lots along the street were built up. into che 189 This house was occupied by a typical new resident in 1889, Thomas J.
