SCALE I:25,000 Recorded by Architectural Preservation Associates Organization Wakefield Historical Commission Date March 1985 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) A good example of the balloon framing technique coming into increasing popular use after 1850 in Wakefield, this Italianate house preserves much of its original detailing. It retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, felling and association ARCHITECIURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. The Italianate style increased its proportions considerably over the Greek Revival as balloon framing replaced the mortise and tenon framing system. This 2½ story Italianate is a good example of the increase.
It has a cross gabled dormer on a gabled roof, corner pilasters below a wide frieze, high granite foundations. The house has three bays across its east facade with two 1 story bays and an entry on the first floor behind a later Colonial Revival portico addition. Paired brackets at the eaves and on the bays are Italianate as are the Eastlake incised designs, but heralding the Queen Anne style is the shingled gable. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. -Among the early settlers to Wakefield were the Hopkins whose homestead and farm were located in the northwestern section of town. The farm seems to have remained within the family which continued to farm its land into the 1920s.
This house replaced the original homestead in the 1850s and as late as 1906 it was surrounded by open farmland which was finally sold off and developed in the 1940s and 50s, one of the late developments on the west side.
