USGS QUADRANGLE SCALE 1:25,000 Recorded by Architectural Preservatir Associates Organization Wakefield Historical Commission Date March 1985 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) A well-designed, executed and preserved example of the Craftsman Style, this house retains integrity of location, setting, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association and meets Criterion Cof the NPHP on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaliate in terms of other buildings within the conmunity. The Craftsman Style aimed at making a house look hand-crafted, using machine made materials. This is one of Wakefield's most creative Craftsman designs and exemplifies the aesthetics of the style. It uses stucco, fieldstone, brick and wood, mixing materials.
The main body of the house has a gable roof and is l½ stories in height. Iwo large cross gables extend from each end to form porches on heavy columns. The central entry is under a gabled hood. A low, broad shed roof dormer has a band of windows. A pergola in front of the main entry, exposed purlins and wooden trim used for contrast above the bands of windows are the elements which give this design a unique Craftsman appearance. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This is one of the first houses to be built in a development begun in 1916 when H. Seymour Kelsey bought a large section of land north of Prospect Street including West Sheffield, Strathmore, Morrison Road West and the Eustis Avenue Extension. The land had belonged in 1906 to wm. S.
Greenough who continued to hold the land on the east and west of this development. By 1922 only two of the lots had been sold and built upon when Kelsey again submitted a plan for the 67 lot development. The gestation period for a development was often 'slow stretching over several decades but here it would seem to have been due to World War I.
