SCALE 1:25,000 - Recorded by Architectural Preservation Associates Organization Wakefield Historical" Commission Date March 1985 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) A rare example, in Wakefield, of high style Colonial Revival design, this well preserved house represents the expansion of Wakefield as a bedroom community during the 1880s. The house retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association and meets Criterion:C of the NRHP on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.
The Colonial Revival style does not appear in Wakefield as often as in many other Boston area towns. It does, however, have several high style examples such as this 2½ story house. High foundations are typical at the turn of the century in Wakefield and are found here. The house has a hipped roof resting on tall corner pilasters. Two pedimented and one Swan's neck dormer with exaggerated pitches and heavy molding appear on the east facade. The main entry typical of "later Colonial Revival designs is very broad with a fan liaht and wide sidelights. A porch with a curved corner wraps around the east and north facades and on the south is a large Palladian window. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.
The land on which this house was built was in the 1820s-1880s part of the farm of James Eustis, and later his heirs, who came to South Reading in 1827 working first as a merchant from his home, then as a farmer. He helped found the South Reading Agricultural Library in 1860 and the Agricultural Society in 1861. He was well-known as an auctioneer and insurance agent and was a town selectman. Eustis' heirs began developing the property about the same time as Wakefield Park was being laid out, in the 1880s. thirty years or so, the land was gradually filled in asia residential in se-a resien81a2 area for commuters from Boston.
