Recorded by Architectural Preservation Associates Organization Wakefield Historical Commission Date March 1985 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (1f applicable) A typical example of early Federal design in Wakefield, this well preserved house features a central chimney - a local variation on standard Federal design. It retains integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association, and meets Criterion Cof the NRHP on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the conmunity.
The William Stimpson homestead is a 2½ story, five bay Federal house which follows the pattern found in Wakefield buildings of this period. It has a central chimney, unlike contemporary Federal houses in other communities which switched.to double chimneys, and it has a boxed cornice with eaves returns. The outer two bays of the north facade are slightly paired, sash is 6/6 and surrounds are simply molded. The current occupant reports that the house may contain an original mantlepiece by Wm. iMcIntyre, the Salem Federal designer. There are six fireplaces and two brick ovens which may, according to Ruth Woodbury, indicate it was originally intended as a two family house. This house was constructed prior to 1795 by William Stimpson, a physician .ad son of Dr. Thomas and Mary. William "Stimpson earlier lived in Greenwood in a large house which he moved before 1765 to the corner of Main and Salem Streets. It was later demolished to build the Lilley Eaton house in 1804. Between 1765 and 1804 Stimpson presumably had this house built. A subsequent owner was William Atwell who owned this and the house at #24 as well. Atwell was a razor strop manufacturer whose shop was at the rear of. this house. The house remained in the Atwell family into the 20th c. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Eaton, Lilley.
