ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and. evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. rhis 5 bay, 2½ story house has the exterior stylistic hallmarks of the Federal style as it looked in Wakefield from c.1790-1810. The house does, however, have unusual features which may be the result of its having been reconstructed c.1786 reusing materials of an older building. It has a large central chimney which is considered the oldest feature of the house dating from mid-17th c. Characteristic of early Federal nouses in Wakefield is the lack of eaves returns in the gable end. Perhaps from an earlier period are the window surrounds visible on the west and several on the north facades which have finely carved moldings, corner blocks cee singaadesom and project slightly from the plane of the facade. Later surrounds are the simpler, flat surrounds.

Windows on the north facade are relatively large with 6/6. sash. They meet the frieze in typical Federal style. The much smaller windows on the south facade second story appear to be HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE building, relates to the development of the community. Deacon Thomas Kendall whose homestead was built here before 1750 was among the earliest settlers in Reading, coming from Lynn. He was a First Parish Deacon and Selectman, and according to Eaton, he was very influential in the town until his death in 1681. His wife Rebecca died in 1703. The next well-known owners of the house were the James Emersons. Mrs. Emerson died in a fire in 1786 and town historian Ruth Woodbury suggests this was the time at which the house was reconstructed. The Emerson family and its descendents lived in the house and farmed the diminishing holdings through much of the 19th century.

They continued to occupy the house into the As well as a farmer, James E. Emerson was listed as a shoe cutter 1874 Directory. In 1860 Emerson was listed as owning 7 acres mowing and tillage on Elm St., a barn 5 acres of pasture and meadow. The gradual break up of the farm began c. 1848 when Emerson St. was a private way laid out into house lots. One of the last Emersons to live in the house was Miss Lois Emerson who died in 1902.
