ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the conmunity. This is one of the finest Federal style houses in Wakefield and in several advanced than were many of its contemporari, It is 2½ stories in height, and has a gable roof with two interior chimney at a time when other houses in Wakefield were built with only the one central chimney.
It has a boxed cornice but makes no returns at the gable end following a town pattern. Outer windows on the second floor are paired as was customary. One of the house's most elegant features is its- architrave door surround with an oval fanlight and narrow half-length sidelights. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Major Suel Winn who built this house was born c.1784 in Burlington, Mass., the son of Jeremiah Winn. In 1808 he married Lydia Whittemore of Charlestown and within a few years house. Mr. Clarence Purrington, a former owner and resident of the house, has the original 1813 bill for dressed granite foundations. Major Winn was origina 1813 6111 foz, built this known for his industry, honesty and sterling character.
In 1844 his extensive farm property was divided by the railroad which led to his death in 1851. On the way home from a town meeting at which he had spoken vehemently for the need to erect a safeguard at the crossing near his home, he was killed by a train trying to cross at that same spot. Mr. Purrington has in his collection Winn's pocketbook he carried at the time of his death The following year a plan was made of his homestead showing the house, 3 barns, a carriage house and slaughter house. The Purringtons bought the property from the Winn heirs and owned it until c.1950, approx, 136 yrs. with only 2 families as owners. On the interior are 7 fireplaces, 4 brick ovens and murals in a front room by Rufus Porter. The site of the Winn Homestead, according to information in the Wakefield Historical Society archives, was previously the site of the Ebenezer.
