Wakefield resident, James Eustis. The property retains integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association, and meets Criteria B and Cof the NRHP on the local level.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Ihis L-shaped house appears to have been built in two different stages. rhe more easily identifiable section is the.Greek Revival presents its gable end to the street. Iwo and the eaves make a full return to create a pediment and the tympanum thus formed is flushboarded to look like stone. 'A wide watertable above relatively high granite foundations and moderately wide cornerboards mark the Greek Revival style. The wing of the house is flushboarded on the first floor and clapboarded on the second. Revival style doorway with a panelled architrave surround with corner blocks and half length sidelights.
Only an interior structural analysis could indicate whether this section of the house is the older as has been suggested in A Driving Tour of Historic Wakefield. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmunity. While it is conjectural how much, if any, of this house is the Captain : Goodwin Homestead, more is known about the later owner, James Eustis. Eustis settled in South Reading in 1827. From the ell of this house, he sold dyr goods for several years; then he branched out to farming. An industrious man, he helped establish in 1860 the South Reading Agricultural Library and in 1861 the Horticultural Society. He was a town Selectman, an insurance agent and is often cited as the town's auctioneer.
His interests extended beyond Wakefield, however, and Eustis became a member of the Bunker Hill Monument Association, which labored over several decades to erect the Revolutionary War battle monument.
