Brick and cement block foundations suggest this house was moved to its site. It is a 1½ story, frame Greek Revival house only three bays wide . and one deep.
The gable roof has a boxed cornice which is typical of Wakefield's houses of that period and has returns above a wide frieze. Simple, plane door and window surrounds were probably never more elaborate. There is 6/1 sash in the windows which would originally have been 6/6. A central chimney follows the Wakefield conservative pattern. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmunity. The ice companies were an extensive presence in Wakefield on both lakes. On Lake Quannapowitt their holdings in the second half of the 19th c. ran from the southwest corner of the lake north almost to Reading on the Lake side and a somewnat shorter distance on the west side of North Avenue.
Some of their land was sold to Lakeside Cemetery in 1846 and individual lots and streets were laid out and built upon including this lot. An 1848 plan shows the cemetery's move to ice company property and shows between the edge of the then smaller cemetery and Grove Street (now North Ave.) that there were two streets, Cemetery and Centre, with houses on them whose property has since been absorbed by the cemetery. It would appear that this house -may have been built c.1840 and moved before 1869 although probably earlier. Grove St. became Railroad Ave. before 1874 and North Ave. about 1903. On both sides of the street residents were mainly Irish coming to Wakefield from the 1850s to work in the rattan and shoe factories. Dennis 0'Connell 'who lived here was born in Ireland and is listed as a HEBBE shoemaker in the 1869 Directory.
