It retains integrity of location, setting design (partial), materials, work- manship, feeling and association, and meets criterion C of the NRHP On the local level. ARCHITECIURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of scher buildings within the comnunity.
This 5 bay Federal house has a gable r00f and 2 interior chimneys, unlike most of its contemporaries in Wakefield which retained the single interior chimney. It is a curious house because one would expect it to be oriented -geodiented to the south which it now is- however, it is the northern entry with its =. molded surround and corner blocks which is the older. The northern half of - the house is 1½ stories, in height while the southern half adapts to the site, dropping to become 2½ stories. The southern entrance is Greek Revival - in style with a pedimented entry. The north rests on granite block found- ations, the south on brick. A tall Federal door surround with a 2 light transom is on the east facade.
In all likelihood, the house originally was oriented to the south and during the 1830s it was given a new door surround while the north and west retained their original Federal enframements. HISTORICAL SICNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the - uilding relates to the development of the community. the Woodward family was among the early settlers to South Reading, arriving before 1700. This house, or a portion of it, was built sometime before 1765 at which time it was occupied by a John Wondward. The Stimpson family owned it in 1795 and by the time the map of 1857 was published there were 3 houses owned by this family in the area. Between 1810 and 1812 Lemuel Tileston, a retired trader, took over ownership of the house. For a few years previously it had been owned by a Boston trader Silas Penniman.
Tileston kept, according to Eaton, a sort of public house there for a few years before the house returned to the Stimpson family again. This time William Stimpson, a bricklayer, owned it and farm of which it was the homestead. It remained in the family until at least 1868. Located on the north shore of Lake Quannapowitt, then "The Great Pond", the area was good for farming as it had been cleared by the native Americans who grew maize there.
