SCALE 1:25,000 Recorded by Architectural Preservation Associates OrganizationWakefield Historical Commission Date March 1985 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) One of the few examples of the Neo-Gothic style in town, this suggested an appropriate atmosphere for education and was popular for Catholic institutional buildings designed by the Boston firm of Maginnis & Walsh. In both plan and elevation St. Joseph's School is a well-preserved example of the type; it retains integrity of location, setting, design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association, and meets Criterion C of the NRHP on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the comnunity.
This two story school on a high basement was designed in the Neo- Gothic or Collegiate Gothic style by the Boston architectural firm Maginnis & Walsh who were responsible for many institutional Catholic buildings including a number at Boston College. The style chosen was intended to suggest medieval England at the time of its resurgence in learning and was to suggest an atmosphere appropriate for education. The modified C-shape school was a plan which was popular for U.S. schools in the 1920s and 30s. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. The first Catholic mass was said in South Reading in 1850 and church membership continued to grow as Irish and then Italian immigrants arrived in South Reading after that date.
A parish house and chapel were built and served until the new church was built in 1871. rectory followed in 1884. This school was built in 1924 and taught by the Sisters of Saint Joseph.
