Commission Date March 1985 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENI (if applicable) One of the finest of an unusually well designed group of schools in Wakefield, this Renaissance Revival structure is an excellent example of the style and represents the heyday of Wakefield's suburban development (1870-1910). The Warren School retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association, and meets Criteria A and C of the NRHP on thelocal level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This is a Renaissance Revival style, two story brick school beneath a hipped slate roof.
The school's north facade has two projecting end pavilions of 5 bays flanking a central section entered through a triple arched portico on the first story. Windows on the first floor have modest flared brick lintels while those on the second floor have arched limestone surrounds. There are 3 hipped roof dormers on the roof. Wakefield's school architecture is of outstanding design quality and this school ranks among the finest. HISTORICAL SICNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. This school was named after Major Horace M. Warren, a Civil War soldier from Wakefield, who took part in the battles of Bull Run, Ball's Bluff, the seige of Port Hudson, and battles of Spottsylvania, Cold Harbor and Weldon Railroad where he was killed.
He was a member of the Richardson Light Guard in all but the last 3 battles. The school was built at the turn of the century to educate the large number of children who had arrived in the town during its period of most active suburbanization in the 1870s-1910s. The ease of commute to Boston, clean air and water, and the beauty of the town's two lakes were cited by local businessmen as its major attractions and during this period industry's growth stabliized and eventually began to decline while the town expanded as a residential community.
