GENERAL ASSESSMENT OF ART WORK Describe materials used, designs, motifs, symbols that are efthe common or unusual, known carvers.
The earliest monuments from 1860s to 1890s are generally of marble and in a tablet form. Many have Hebrew inscriptions. In the 20th century the markers became lower and wider, often in a semi-circular shane with only a family name inscribed or in relief on the stone. These later stones are more often granite or limestone. Place of birth and often place of death are recorded on these stones unlike in Christian cemetaries. Often they are from Germany and died in Boston. One case even notes the hospital in which the person died. Uniformity of marker size, material and messages are notabie. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain religious affiliations, major period of use and evaluate historical importance of burial ground within the community. This cemetary was begun in 1859 by Boston's Temple Israel, the first synagogue established in Boston.
Iwo other Boston congregations established cemetaries outside the city in Lynn and Brookline. The earliest stones are located, as are those in adiacent Lakeview Cemetarv, near the water. Unlike that cemetary, however, which is laid out in romantic curving paths and gently rolling landscabe, Temple Israel Cemetary is laid out on an orderly grid on flat land and is planted primarily with low growing shrubbery. rowing ahrubory on tiat and In this cemetary is buried Pabbi Joshua Liebman, noted author.
