Historical Comnission Date May 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The first Amos keyes House retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship, feeling and association with Somerville's mid-l9th century development, moved one block ten years after its construction.
The house is among the best preserved residences of the period in this section of northcentral Somerville. It is a well executed example of the transition from the Greek Revival to the Italianate and as such, fulfills Criterion C and Exception B of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. Together with the Adams-Locke House at 178 Central Street (#121), this residence remains among the outstanding mid-nineteenth century survivors of Winter Hill. The 3-bay house with sidehall plan has a sidelight entrance in its gable end. A fine Doric-columned single-story porch runs along the east (Adams Street) south elevations of the house. Floor-length windows at the first story are 6/9, while second-story windows are 6/6.
A round-headed gable window effects the transition from Greek Revival to Italianate styling. The building is an excellent state of preservation. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Although Adams Street was platted ca. 1845, no construction occurred prior to the moving of this house in 1870. Originally built on Central Street by produce dealer Amos Keyes ca. 1860, 12 Adams was relocated one-block when Keyes built a high-style Second Empire residence on the Central Street site in BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Hopkins, G.
