Historical Conmission Date June 1986 NATIONAL REGISTER CRITERIA STATEMENT (if applicable) The originally detailed Lemuel Snow Jr. House is an intact example of patternbook inspired Queen Anne styling. Retaining integrity of location, design, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association, it fulfills Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places on the local level.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community. This patternbook Queen Anne-style house is a 2 1/2 story gable roofed house with a full height gabled polygonal bay offset to the left. The gable roof of the bay projects slightly and is supported by overscale consoles. The shed roofed entrance porch has bulbous turned posts and openwork frieze. Alternating bands of a variety of clapboard shingles enliven the building's facade. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community. Lemuel Snow Jr., son of a local carpenter, was a Somerville truant officer.

This house is one of several fine period residences on Benton Road and neighboring Hudson Street that bear a resemblance in both form and decorative vocabulatory (see MHC # 116 and 148). All may be the work of Lemuel Snow, Jr., the builder/occupant of 81 Benton Road. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Bromley, G. W.
